Spring Hill native displays art

By Michael Jacobson

James A. Athmann, a native of Spring Hill, had his artwork displayed at the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge Art Gallery this past spring and summer. The exhibit, "Trails Through Nature," opened in May, ran for seven weeks, and closed in July.

The exhibit included 35 oil paintings of nature landscapes of parks in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and 10 pencil drawings of Minnesota wildlife, including scenes from Minnehaha Creek and the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge.

Athmann, a 1967 Melrose High School graduate, was born at the Paynesville Hospital and raised in Spring Hill. He first studied art through a correspondence course and it was his favorite class in high school. He studied commercial art at Alexandria Vocational School after high school and worked as an artist and sign painter for a couple years in the early 1970s.

He started painting and drawing again in 2003.

He currently lives in Richfield, and his work will be exhibited at the Richfield Community Center in January and February 2006.
