Top 12 Stories of 2002: PAHCS buys Good Sam

By Michael Jacobson

In June 2002, after a nine-month courtship that included a couple delays, the Paynesville Area Health Care System's purchase of the Good Samaritan Care Center in Paynesville and the Hilltop Good Samaritan Center in Watkins was completed. PAHCS bought the long-term-care facilities for $1.8 million, expanding their operation to include 175 nursing home beds.

PAHCS had operated both homes since May, renaming the Good Samaritan Care Center as Washburne Court. Since the merger, PAHCS has announced its intention to switch Washburne Court from a board-and-care facility to assisted living. That change should become a reality in 2003.

PAHCS also continued its $7.5-million remodeling project on its main campus in 2002. A new emergency room, a clinic addition, a remodeled Koronis Manor, and three new birthing suites opened this year, with the project set to finish in 2003.
