Mary Bekaert, 87, Paynesville
Mary K. Bekaert, 87, of Paynesville passed away on Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Koronis Manor. A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 1, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. Reverend Glenn Krystosek will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church in Paynesville. Mary was born on Sept. 22, 1931, in Lincoln, Ill. to Hermon and Emma (Harness) Krotz. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in education from St. Cloud State University and was a teacher all of her life. Mary married the father of her children, Harvey Haag. They later divorced. Mary then married Newell Bengston, who later passed away. She then married Leon Bekaert, and he too passed away. Mary enjoyed sports, fishing, hunting, animals, and traveling out west to Montana during her summer breaks. She especially loved the time spent with her family. Mary is survived by her children: Katherine Haag of Kanab, Utah, Patrick Haag of Spring Valley, and Scott (Catherine) of Delano; one grandson, Jon Bexel; one great-grandson; sisters, Ann Nelson and Betty Anderson; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; three husbands; and son, Bradley James.
Diana Joanne Fiecke, 76, of Paynesville died Friday, Sept. 21, 2018, at her home. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27, at Grace United Methodist Church in Paynesville. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Paynesville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville. Diana Fiecke was born on July 29, 1942, in Paynesville. She was the daughter of Donald and Dorothy (Kruger) Holifer. She grew up on the family farm near Paynesville and attended country grade school and Paynesville High School, graduating in 1960. After school, she moved to Minneapolis and worked for a short time before moving back to Paynesville. In 1961, she was united in marriage to Richard Holt. This union was blessed with two sons, Jeff and Bruce. They made their home in Paynesville where she did daycare. In 1974, she was united in marriage to Earl Brown and they were blessed with two sons, Tim and Shane. In 1980, she was united in marriage to Jim Fiecke. In May 1994, she began a partnership with Rodger Puhrmann. They made their home on a hobby farm near Paynesville where she continued to do daycare until retiring in August 2018. Diana was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. She enjoyed spending time with family, children, cats, drinking coffee, collecting angels, baking, playing Bunco, and reading. She is survived by her companion, Rodger Puhrmann; sons, Bruce Holt of Willmar, Jeff Holt of Paynesville, Tim (Julie) Brown of Paynesville, and Shane (Pam) Brown of Sauk Centre; and grandchildren, Ethan and Seth Brown. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Donna Doele.
Orville Stang, 78, Paynesville Orville John Stang, 78, of rural Paynesville, died on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018, at the CentraCare Koronis Manor Nursing Home in Paynesville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. Reverend Glenn Krystosek will be the celebrant. Burial will be in the St. Agnes Parish Cemetery at Roscoe. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20, at St. Louis Catholic Church and one hour prior to the funeral on Friday morning. Catholic United Financial, Knights of Columbus Council #3820, and St. Joseph's Society will all pray at 4 p.m. on Thursday. Orville was born on June 2, 1940, in Paynesville, Minn. He was the son of Edward and Aegidia (Becker) Stang. He attended school in Roscoe and later Paynesville, where he graduated from high school in 1958. He then went to work for Bresson John Deere where he worked for 40 years. He started out as a set up man on new equipment and later was a mechanic. He retired in 1998. In his retirement he enjoyed eating out, fishing, and working on old John Deere two-cylinder tractors. Usually if you had a problem, he could tell you how to fix it without even looking. He became a resident of the CentraCare Koronis Manor this past April. He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church and St. Joseph's Society, both of Roscoe. He was also a Honorary Life Member of Knights of Columbus Council #3820 of Paynesville and a 50-year member of Catholic United Financial. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, David, in 1998. He is survived by his brother, Virgil of Paynesville; sister, Laura (Tom) Jurek of Cheyanne, Wyo.; sister-in-law, Barbara (Matt) Walz of Marty, Minn.; nieces; nephews; cousins; and many friends.
Leona Rosalia Frieler, 98, of Melrose, formerly of Greenwald, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, Sept. 14, 2018, at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minn. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, at Saint Andrew's Catholic Church in Greenwald with Reverend Marvin Enneking officiating and Deacon Jim Schulzetenberg concelebrating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20, at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church in Greenwald. The Christian Women will pray a rosary at 6:30 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 7 p.m. on Thursday evening at the funeral home. Leona Schulzetenberg was born on Dec. 21, 1919, in Greenwald, Minn., to Anton and Christine (Meyer) Schulzetenberg. She married John Frieler on June 20, 1945, at Saint Andrew's Catholic Church in Greenwald. The couple made their home near New Munich where they farmed and raised their family. The couple retired from farming and moved to Greenwald in 1981. Leona moved to Parkview in Melrose in 2014 and then into the nursing home in 2015. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, quilting, embroidering, sewing, and baking. Leona was a member of Saint Andrew's Catholic Church in Greenwald and Saint Anne's Christian Women. Survivors include her children: Rodney (Darlene) Frieler of St. Cloud, James Frieler of New Munich, Steven (Jane) Frieler of Paynesville, Rose Mary (Larry) Van Beck of Melrose, Ruth Ann (Stanley) Heinen of Spring Hill, and Thomas (Linda) Frieler of New Munich; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren plus one on the way; and sister-in-law, Mary Ann Schulzetenberg. Leona was preceded in death by her husband, John Frieler on Jan. 1, 1991; parents; twin daughters; and brothers, Melvin Schulzetenberg and Alphonse (Celesta) Schulzetenberg. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.
Ruth Ellen Jones, 70, of Paynesville, passed away on Sept. 12, 2018, surrounded by her loved ones. Ruth was born on Dec. 28, 1947, in Shidler, Okla., to Ina Feagans (Coble) and C.B Feagans. Ruth will be dearly missed by her family; special friend, Warren Theel of Paynesville; son, Lucas (Mindy) Jones of Sartell; daughter, Elizabeth (Erik) of Wisconsin; son, Matthew (Mandy) of South Dakota; sister, Betty Baker of Tuscon, Ariz.; grandchildren: Logan, Riley, Garrett, Liberty, Chance, Casie, Tyler, Nayla, and Aubrey; niece, Cyndy; and nephew, Clint. Ruth was known as a person who always put others first, so for her last act of giving, she donated her body to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. A celebration of her life will be held at the Paynesville Area Center (1105 West Main Street) on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 1 to 4 p.m. The children would like to thank all the staff at the St. Cloud and Paynesville hospitals and for all the care and compassion shown to their mother.
Lawrence J. Fleischhacker, 88, of Paynesville, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2018, at his home in Paynesville. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville.Reverend Glenn Krystosek will officiate. Entombment will take place in the Parish Cemetery Mausoleum. Family and friends may call from 4 until 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, and after 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at the church. Arrangements are with the Daniel-Anderson Funeral Home in Paynesville. Lawrence was born on Aug. 10, 1930, in St. Martin Township in Stearns County, to Frederick and Apolonia (Wolbeck) Fleischhacker. He married Mary Ann Kalthoff on Sept. 26, 1950, at St. Martin's Catholic Church in St. Martin. Together they raised their family and farmed in the St. Martin area. In 1990 they moved to the Paynesville area where he remained involved in his family's local farms. Lawrence was active on the St. Martin Township board for many years. He was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church, the Mission Group in Paynesville, the Catholic Order of Foresters, Catholic United Financial, and the St. Joseph's and St. Margaret's Society. Lawrence enjoyed playing cards, fishing, carpentry, welding, gameshows, polka music, the outdoors, and spending time with friends. He especially loved all the time spent with his children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren. He is survived by his children: Ervin (Sharon) of Paynesville, Jerry (JoAnn) of Albany, Doris (Ron) Frericks of Grey Eagle, Marilyn (Dick) Schoenberg of Cold Spring, Fred (Sheila) of Paynesville, Sharon (John) Schulzetenberg of Spring Hill, Larry (Karen) of St. Martin, JoAnn (Ike) Euteneuer of St. Martin, Pauline (Ron) Hommerding of Cold Spring, Deb (Rick) Doll of St. Martin, Glen (Terri) of St. Martin, and Wayne and James Bonine of Paynesville; 44 grandchildren; 64 great-grandchildren; sister and brother, Christine (Leander) Kalthoff of Paynesville and Benedict (Ione) of Freeport; brothers-in-law, Edward Job of Freeport, and Larry Massman of St. Cloud; sister-in-law, Anna May Fleischhacker of Albany; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Ann in 2009; sons, Dean and Joseph; and one infant boy; granddaughter, Lisa Fleischhacker; sisters, Agnes Job, Marie Massman; and brother, Herman Fleischhacker. LeRoy Edmund Thomsen, 95, of Paynesville, went to join his beloved wife, Verna, in heaven, on Sunday, Sept. 2, 2018. A funeral service will be held on Monday, Sept. 10 at 11 a.m., at Paynesville Lutheran Church, followed by interment at Burr Oak Cemetery in Union Grove Township. Visitation will be held on Sunday, Sept. 9, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the church, and for one hour prior to the church service. Services are entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville, www.hafh.org. LeRoy Thomsen was born on Jan. 19, 1923, in Cedar Bluffs, Neb., to Gustav and Bertha (Schultz) Thomsen. He was baptized at his parents' home on Feb. 6, 1923. LeRoy was raised on his parents' farm, first near Cedar Bluffs, Neb., and later, in 1929, when they moved to Gurley, Neb. In 1939, the family moved to a farm near Grove City, Minn. In March of 1945, LeRoy was called to serve in the United States Navy, where he saw active duty in the Pacific. He was honorably discharged in July of 1946, and on July 30, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Verna Emma Olson. Their union was blessed with three sons. LeRoy and Verna purchased their family farm and home in Union Grove Township in 1947, and raised their family there until they retired and later moved to Paynesville in 2002. They had been happily married for almost 69 years when Verna passed away in March of 2015. LeRoy then moved to 700 Stearns Place and at the beginning of 2018, into Koronis Manor, where he resided until his death. A lifelong Lutheran, LeRoy was a member of Paynesville Lutheran Church. He had faithfully served his church at times as an elder and board member. Some highlights of his life were traveling to Hawaii with Verna to see Pearl Harbor, being able to tour Washington D.C. in 2009 as part of the Honor Flight program, and several trips to Nebraska, California, and Wisconsin to visit his family, children and grandchildren, in whom he delighted. He served his community as a school board member, as a member of the Meeker County Draft Board, and as a member of the Union Grove Township Board. LeRoy above all took an avid interest in all things related to farming, his vocation and way of life. He is survived by three sons: David (Juliann) of Eden Prairie, Douglas (Connie) of St. Cloud, and Terry (Debra) of Sunburg; six grandchildren: Leah (Tom) Dasovich, Dan (and Lynne) Thomsen, JoAnna Thomsen, Andrew (and Mikki Tuohy) Thomsen, Stephanie (Mike) Hemmesch, and Stacy (Patrick) Utsch; twelve great-grandchildren: Emma, Evelyn, Eleanor, Lillian, Peyton, Chloe, Easton, Gannon, Madelyn, Ian, Maclaine, and Leroy; and numerous nieces and nephews. He leaves behind many wonderful friends and neighbors in Paynesville. LeRoy was preceded in death by his wife, Verna; his parents; and siblings: Paul, Alvin, Arnold, Herman, Theodore, Lucille, Marie, Elmer, and infant twin brother, Leonard. The family prefers memorials in lieu of flowers.
