Bernice Gully, 90, Paynesville
Bernice M. Gully, 90, of Paynesville died on Friday, Oct. 22, at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Oct. 26, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. Burial was in St. Louis Parish Cemetery.

Bernice Gully was born on July 11, 1920, to Leo and Emily (Burg) Schmitz in St. Martin.

She married Arnold A. Gully on Jan. 27, 1948, in St. Nicholas. They farmed in the Paynesville area all of their lives.

After retiring from farming, they moved into Paynesville in 1983. Their union lasted until Arnold's death in 2004.

Bernice is survived by her children, Gerry (Rose) of Boyd, Wis., Roger (Nancy) of St. Cloud, Jean (Ron) Snyder of Richfield, Gordy (Bonnie) of Paynesville, Tom of Clearwater, and Ruth (Mike) Miller of St. Cloud; 12 grandchildren; nine greatgrandchildren; brother, Erwin of St. Cloud; and sisters, Viola Keul of Cold Spring and Eileen Warzecha.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arnold; brothers, Gilbert, Harold, and Werner; and sister, Lucile Vossen.


Wanda Vadner, 79, Paynesville
Wanda Vadner, 79, of Paynesville died on Thursday, Oct. 21, at the Koronis Manor in Paynesville.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Oct. 26, at Paynesville Lutheran Church. Burial was in the Paynesville Cemetery.

Wanda Vadner was born on Feb. 4, 1933, to James and Ella (Kelm) Custer in Paynesville.

She married Dale L. Vadner on July 5, 1958, at Grace United Methodist Church in Paynesville. Their union lasted until Dale's death on July 30, 2003.

She is survived by her children, Faye of Paynesville, James (Terri) of St. Cloud, and Robert (Connie) of Eden Valley; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dale; and sister, Audrey Thayer.


Mary Schultz, 83, Paynesville
Mary M. Schultz, 83, of Paynesville died on Sunday, Oct. 10, at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.

A funeral service was held on Friday, Oct. 15, at Paynesville Lutheran Church. Burial was in the Paynesville Cemetery.

Mary Margaret Schultz was born on Sept. 7, 1927, to Otto and Mildred (Hoelzer) Mueller in St. Louis, Mo. She grew up in the Chicago area, where she attended school.

At the age of 16, Mary left home to work at Motorola.

On Jan. 17, 1948, she married William Schultz. This union was blessed with a daughter and a son.

The family moved around because of William's job with the Good Samaritan Society. They lived in Broadview, Ill., Milwaukee, Wis., Wisner, Neb., Aneta, N.D., and Crosby, N.D., before moving to Paynesville in 1975.

Mary was a social worker for Tri Cap from 1975-1992, when she retired. After moving to Paynesville, she earned her GED and went on to take classes at St. Cloud State University.

William died in 1984. Together, they shared in 36 years of marriage.

Mary is survived by her children, William Schultz of Franklin, Va., and Barb (Dave) Jacobson of Paynesville; a grandson; a great-granddaughter; and siblings, Walter Langdon, Eileen Brashars, and Sharon DeBoch.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William; and two brothers.


John Garvey, 65, Paynesville
John Garvey, 65, of Paynesville died on Wednesday, Oct. 13, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis from complications of health-related issues.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 16, at Church of Our Lady in Manannah. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

John Garvey was born on May 9, 1945, to John Peter "Jack" and Rose (Dillon) Garvey in Richmond.

He married Shirley Ann Boyer on June 20, 1970, at Church of Our Lady in Manannah.

John farmed and worked construction for Johnson Brothers, Mid Minnesota Hot Mix, and Kuechle Underground. He also worked at the CentraSota fertilizer plant in Eden Valley.

John is survived by his wife, Shirley of Paynesville; children, Jeanne (Chuck) Geislinger of Manannah, John (Donna) Garvey of Eden Valley, and Tammy (Mike) Stoffer of Litchfield; sisters, and brother, Rose Ann Hennen of Litchfield, Robert Garvey of Edina, and Kay Kipf of Watkins; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Sharon Garvey.


Beatrice Schwandt, 87, Paynesville
Beatrice Schwandt, 87, of Paynesville died on Thursday, Oct. 14, at Assumption Nursing Home in Cold Spring.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at River of Life Assembly of God in Cold Spring. Burial was in the Paynesville Cemetery.

Beatrice Harriet Schwandt was born on Feb. 7, 1923, to Martin and Margarethe Monson in Hawick. She graduated from Paynesville High School in 1940.

Beatrice married Norman Schwandt on April 23, 1942. She lived in Paynesville all her married life. Eleven children were born to this union, which lasted until Norman's death in 1985.

Beatrice was a homemaker who loved to garden, cook, and bake while raising her 11 children. She also did in-home day care for many years.

Beatrice is survived by her children, Ken (Lord) of St. Cloud, Kathy Knutson of Paynesville, Keith (Leah) of Kansas, Karlene (Rodney) Gayle of Richmond, RoseAnne (Val) Parks of Paynesville, Dennis (Patty) of St. Cloud, Diane (Bob) Decowski of Ostego, Lynda (David) Johnson of North Dakota, Richard (Mary) of Wisconsin, Steven (Mary Pat) of Paynesville, and Marilee of Cold Spring; 32 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Norman; a granddaughter; a grandson; sister, Judelle; brother, Harlan; a brother-in-law; and two sisters-in-law.


Caroline Klein, 96, Paynesville
Caroline C. Klein, 96, of Paynesville died on Thursday, Oct. 14, at Pine Haven Nursing Home in Melrose.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Oct. 18, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Caroline was born on March 18, 1914, in Granville, Iowa, to Gregor and Mary (Rieth) Penning.

She married Joseph A. Klein on Jan. 5, 1937, in Granville, Iowa. They lived in Hospers, Iowa for one year, Sibley, Iowa, for seven years, and Ashton, Iowa until 1959, when they moved to Paynesville. Their union lasted until Joseph's death in 1974.

She was a nurse's aide at the Koronis Manor for over 25 years.

Caroline is survived by her children, Elizabeth Klein of Carson City, Nev., Eva Sartell of Minong, Wis., Mary E. (Tony)Gruenes of Spring Hill, Kay (Dick) Tougas of New York Mills, Laura (Ken) Pike of Robbinsdale, Marguerite (Ron) Bell of Coconut Creek, Fla., and Amy (Steve) Parker of Arizona City, Ariz.; 29 grandchildren; 72 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; brother and sister, Andrew (Vitalena) Penning of Granville and Angeline Goebel of Worthington; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph; two son-in-laws; a great-grandson; and 11 brothers and sisters.


Ardis Brossard, 83, Eden Valley
Ardis D. Brossard, 83, of Eden Valley died on Monday, Oct. 11, at the Paynesville Area Hospital.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, Oct. 16, at Peace United Church of Christ in Eden Valley. There was a private family burial.

Ardis Darlene Brossard was born on April 17, 1927, in Pelican Rapids, to Clarence and Gertrude (Damfchen) Grovdahl.

Her family moved to Battle Lake, where she graduated from high school.

In April 22, 1954, Ardis married Fayette Brossard. This union was blessed with a son.

The family made their home on Rice Lake in rural Eden Valley.

Ardis and Fayette ran Fayette's family business, BrossardŐs Resort, until the late 1970s, when the cabins were sold to private owners. Ardis also worked at several other jobs during her life including as a nurseŐs aide at the Paynesville Hospital.

In 1992, Fayette was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, Ardis, along with hospice, took care of him until he passed away in December 1992. Together, they shared in 38 years of marriage.

Ardis is survived by her son, Michael (Marilyn) of Dassel; two grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Fayette; sisters, Sharon, Gloria, Marlys, and Garda; and brother, Robert.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.


John Stanley Stanard, 87, Aurora
Dr. John Stanley (Stan) Stanard, 87, of Aurora, Nebraska, died on Thursday, Sept. 23, at his home.

A private memorial graveside service was held at the Seward Cemetery.

Dr. Stanley Stanard was born on Sept. 24, 1922, to John T. and Mabel (Hotchkiss) Stanard in Ulysses, Neb.

He graduated from Ulysses High School in 1940 and from Kemper Military School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the medical corps and was honorably discharged.

In 1943, married Marge Yardley. Four children were born to this union: Pat, Sue, Mike, and Jan.

He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1947 and graduated from Northern Illinois College of Optometry in 1950.

In 1951, they moved to Aurora, Nebraska, and Stan opened his optometry practice on the town square.

Stan married Lois (Butterfield) Erickson in 1978. Stan retired after more than 40 years of practice.

He had been a seasonal resident of Paynesville since 1933.

Stan is survived by his wife, Lois of Aurora; children, Pat Sell of Fort Worth, Texas, Sue (Fred) Hosman of Omaha, Mike (Denise) Stanard of St. Paul, and Jan Stanard of Denver, Colo.; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Harriett.

Memorials may be made to Aurora United Methodist Church or the Plainsman Museum.


Alice Greeley, 90, Litchfield
Alice Greeley, 90, of Litchfield died on Sunday, Oct. 10, at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Litchfield.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 13, at 11 a.m., at the United Methodist Church in Litchfield. Burial will be in Burr Oak Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 12, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Johnson Hagglund Funeral Home in Litchfield.

Alice Caroline (Wendroth) Greeley was born on Sept. 9, 1920, to George and Ida (Schultz) Wendroth in Meeker County. She attended country school through the eighth grade.

Alice met and fell in love with Jarvis Greeley. They were married on July 2, 1939, at the church parsonage in Hutchinson. This union was blessed with five children: Karen, Clarice, Lois, Willis, and Willard.

Alice and Jarvis had a farm in the Paynesville area, where they raised their children.

Alice is survived by her daughter, Lois (James) Patten of Cloquet; sons, Willis (Sharon) Greeley of Hutchinson and Willard (Karen) Greeley of New London; two sons-in-law; 15 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and brother, Harold Wendroth of Litchfield.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Jarvis; parents; two daughters, Karen Wendroth and Clarice Midtling; and one granddaughter.


Warren C. Bredeson, 87, Alamo, Texas
Warren C. Bredeson, 87, of Alamo, Texas, died on Thursday, Sept. 30.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 23, at 11 a.m., at Paynesville Lutheran Church, followed by a luncheon at 12:30 p.m., at the Paynesville American Legion.

Warren Bredeson was born on March 24, 1923, to Ole and Marie Bredeson in New Prairie, Minn. He was one of eight children.

He lived in Minnesota until the 1980s, when he and his first wife, Juanita, moved to Colorado. He was blessed with nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Warren served in the United States Navy as an aviation electricianŐs mate First Class and saw action in both WWII and the Korean War. He received the WWII Victory Medal, the American Defense Medal, and a Good Conduct Medal.

Warren is survived by his wife, Frances Bredeson of Alamo, Texas; daughters, Melliney (Gerald) Saltarelli of Deerfield, Ill., and Dana (Jeff) Cline of Hamel, Minn.; son, Kevin (Debi) Bredeson of Kiowa, Colo; and two stepchildren, Nellie McGinn of Hibbing and Peter McGinn of Cook, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Juanita Bredeson.


Hilary Glenz, 95, Onamia
Hilary Glenz, 95, of Onamia died on Sunday, Oct. 3, at Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin.

Graveside services for Hilary, who was born and raised in Paynesville, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 16, at 11 a.m., at Foster Cemetery near Cove.
