Veronica Sawrey, 90, Paynesville
Veronica Sawrey, 90, of Paynesville died on Monday, Oct. 19, in Gowrie, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Oct. 22, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Veronica R. Sawrey was born on May 17, 1919, to George and Margaret (McCaffery) Gordon in Paynesville.

She married Joseph Sawrey on Nov. 4, 1937, in Cogswell, N.D..

She was in business with her husband, operating the shoe store in Paynesville for many years. She also worked at North American Creameries and Corner Drug Store.

The Sawreys also owned an egg-candling place in Eden Valley.

Veronica is survived by her daughter, Claudia (Bruce) Harrison of Harcourt, Iowa; a daughter-in-law; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a brother-in-law.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph; daughter, Joeleen; son, David; and brother, George "Cy" Gordon.


Kenneth Eisenbacher, 80, Spicer
Kenneth Eisenbacher, 80, of Spicer died on Monday, Oct. 19, at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Oct. 23, at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church in Spicer. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Kenneth Frank Eisenbacher was born on July 22, 1929, to George and Florence (Poss) Eisenbacher on the family farm near St. James.

On July 21, 1948, he entered the US Army. He was stationed in Germany until his discharge on July 12, 1950.

He then returned to Minnesota and farmed with his family near Atwater.

On Nov. 7, 1953, Kenneth married Geraldean Exline at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Davenport, Iowa. They made their home in Davenport, where he worked for Oscar Mayer.

They moved to Lake Calhoun in rural Spicer in 1964, where they farmed until 1978, when he began working for Hanson Silo as a parts manager for ten years. He then returned to school, receiving his GED and part sales management degree and graduating with honors.

Kenneth is survived by his sons, Steven (Kathy) Eisenbacher of Spicer, Stanley Eisenbacher of Litchfield, George (Nancy) Eisenbacher of Watkins, and Nathan (Joan) Eisenbacher of Sartell; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and siblings, Lillian, Rita, Agatha, Marjorie, Roger, and Earl.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gerry; parents, George and Florence; and siblings, Walter, Donald, Leonard, Harold, Marion, Arlene, and Helen. 


Peter Holper, 100, Paynesville
Peter J. Holper, 100, of Paynesville died on Friday, Oct. 9, at his home.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 11:30 a.m., at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. Burial will be in the parish cemetery with full military honors.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 13, from 4 to 8 p.m., at St. Louis Catholic Church and one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Pete Holper was born on May 14, 1909, to John and Anna (Rueter) Holper in Wadena, Minn. His family moved to Paynesville in 1913, where they farmed.

Pete graduated from Paynesville High School and attended St. Cloud Business College.

He served during World War II in the United States Army/Air Force.

He married Adeline Mary Schleper on Aug. 28, 1945, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. The couple shared 64 years of marriage.

He owned and operated Pete and Ole's Tavern for 17 years.

He was then employed as a building engineer at St. Cloud State University until his retirement. Pete worked part-time with his wife Adeline at the Paynesville Off Sale Liquor Store during his retirement.

Peter is survived by his wife, Adeline; children, Linda (Tom) Mueller of Gilman, Peter (Jeannine) of Foster City, Calif., Timothy (Roxanna) of Elgin, Catherine (Scott) Robinson of Carbondale, Colo., Robert (Kathleen) of Rosemount, and James (Joan) of Stillwater; and 16 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter; and brothers and sisters, Susanna, Catherine, Barbara, Nicholas, Jacob, Marcus, Genevieve, and Marie.


Marion Saenger, 86, Paynesville
Marion Saenger, 86, of Paynesville died on Friday, Oct. 2, at the Koronis Manor in Paynesville.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 1 p.m., at Nordland Lutheran Church in rural Paynesville. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Marion C. Saenger was born on Feb. 14, 1923, to Charles and May (Olsen) Larson in Minneapolis. She grew up in Minneapolis, where she attended William Penn Elementary School and graduated from Minneapolis North High School in 1941.

After high school, she worked as a secretary for Landers Excavating in Minneapolis. 

She married Arnold Saenger on June 19, 1948, at Christ English Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. One daughter was born to this union.

The family made their home in Minneapolis, where Marion was a stay at home mom.

In 1968, Marion and Arnold moved to rural Paynesville, where Arnold became a local carpenter. After moving to Paynesville, Marion worked at the middle school as a library aide.

Marion is survived by her husband, Arnold; daughter, Carol (Duane) Warmbold of Paynesville; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Carl.


Gary Balbach, 61, Spicer
Gary W. Balbach, 61, of Spicer died on Saturday, Oct. 3, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Oct. 8, at 11 a.m., at Nordland Lutheran Church in rural Paynesville. Burial will be in Springfield, Minn.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Gary W. Balbach was born on May 30, 1948, to William and Lucille (Fiedler) Balbach in Springfield, Minn. He grew up in Springfield, where he attended St. Raphael's Catholic School and graduated from Springfield High School.

On Dec. 17, 1966, Gary married Sandy Bielen at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield. A daughter and son were born to this union.

The family made their home in Comfrey, where they farmed the Balbach Family Centennial Farm and farmed in the Toronto, S.D., area.

In 1995, Gary and Sandy moved to Lake Calhoun in rural Spicer. 

Gary is survived by his wife, Sandy, of Spicer; daughter, Shelly (Keith) Blaschko of Garden City; five grandchildren; five adopted grandchildren; siblings, Jim Balbach of Bertha, Diane Thram of Sanborn, Pat Dauer of Springfield, Lisa Zihlke of Springfield, and Lori Kretsch of Springfield; mother-in-law; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; son, Rick; and a brother-in-law.
