Ervin Radunz, 79, Sauk Rapids
Ervin Radunz, 79, of Sauk Rapids died on Friday, Oct. 31, at the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Nov. 6, at 11 a.m., at the First United Methodist Church in St. Cloud. Burial will be at the Ripley Cemetery in Litchfield with military honors.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 5, from 4 to 8 p.m., at the Daniel Funeral Home in St. Cloud and after 10 a.m. on Thursday at the church.

Erv Radunz was born on April 1, 1929, to Frank and Fern (Davis) Radunz in Greenleaf Township in Meeker County. He grew up in Greenleaf Township, attending rural schools and Litchfield High School.

Erv served his country in the United States Army.

He married Rose Marie Anderson on Aug. 28, 1949, in Litchfield.

Erv was a Standard Oil Agent in Litchfield until moving to St. Cloud in 1964. Erv, with his family, owned and operated Erv's Fuel Stop on Highway 10 in St. Cloud until 1978. He and his family also opened a second truck stop in Hasty on Interstate 94 and opened Radson Inc., a bulk oil distributorship, in Annandale and Avon.

After retiring in 1992, Erv drove school bus for the Brainerd and Sauk Rapids-Rice school districts.

He is survived by his wife, Rose Marie of Sauk Rapids; children, Sheila (John) Bichler of Albertville, Steve (Mary K.) of Sartell, Tim (Mary L.) of Sartell, Mike (Katy) of Wahkon, Mark "Toody" (Tamara) of Becker, and Jeff of Becker; 11 grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Kenneth.

Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.


Doug Mages, 22, Paynesville
Doug Mages, 22, of Paynesville died on Saturday, Oct. 25, at his home on Rice Lake.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at the St. Martin Parish Center. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Doug Mages was born on Nov. 7, 1985, to Duane and Jermayne (Hartmann) Mages in Paynesville.

He worked on the family farm. He graduated from Paynesville Area High School, where he participated in football, basketball, and baseball.

Doug is survived by his parents, Duane and Jermayne; siblings, Roger of Paynesville, Jim of Alexandria, Laura Wolf of Siren, Wis., Ken of Montevideo, Steven of Cold Spring, and Melanie of Paynesville; grandparents; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Paula and an uncle.


Lucille Athmann, 83, Spring Hill
Lucille M. Athmann, 83, of Spring Hill died on Friday, Oct. 24, at the Koronis Manor in Paynesville.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Oct. 27, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spring Hill. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Lucille Athmann was born on Oct. 16, 1925, to Alois and Caroline (Illies) Nathe in Getty Township in Stearns County.

She married Wilfred Athmann on June 17, 1946, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Elrosa. The couple lived and farmed in the Spring Hill area. Their union lasted until Wilfred's death on Aug. 8, 1999.

Lucille was a homemaker all her life.

In July 2005, she moved to the Koronis Manor in Paynesville.

Lucille is survived by her children, Patrick (Beverly) Athmann of Hanover, James (Mona) Athmann of Eden Prairie, Brenda Athmann of Mounds View, and Sandy (Dave) Hellickson of Brooten; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sister, Theresa Krussel of Seattle, Wash.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wilfred; daughter, Marchell "Ma" Lieser; and brothers and sisters, Raymond, Loretta Holewa, Bertha Schutta, Ralph, Walter and Tony.


Lois Bergland, 67, New London
Lois "Toni" Bergland, 67, of New London died on Friday, Oct. 17, following a short, unexpected illness.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 21, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 11 a.m., at Nordland Lutheran Church in rural Paynesville.

Toni A. Bergland was born in Minneapolis.

She was the Community Education/public relations director for Orono School District for more than 25 years.

Prior to moving to New London, she lived in Maple Plain for 37 years.

Toni is survived by her children, Cathy, Beth (Christian) Johnson, and Brent (Raina); three grandchildren; sister, Gloria Hassinger; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dean.

In lieu of flowers, send memorials to the Toni Bergland Memorial at Orono schools, the Animal Humane Society, or Nordland Lutheran Church (Nordland Knitters).


Violet Owen, 90, Paynesville
Violet G. Owen, 90, of Paynesville died on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Ridgeview Hospital in Waconia.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Oct. 20, at Calvary Baptist Church in Paynesville. Burial was in the Paynesville Cemetery.

Violet Owen was born on June 26, 1918, to Frank and Sylvinia (Barger) Pratt in Paynesville.

She married Roderick C. Owen on Dec. 23, 1938, in Paynesville. She lived most of her married life in Paynesville. Their union lasted until Roderick's death in 1992.

She loved knitting and being with her grandchildren. She enjoyed camping and fishing.

Violet is survived by her children, R. David (Rosemary) of River Falls, Wis., Rose Marie (Richard) Cloakey of Staples, Minn., Valarie Lass of Richfield, Verna (Curtis) Gruber of Buffalo, Terry (LuAnne) of Big Lake, and Timothy (Trudy) of Minneapolis; 19 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; brothers, Samuel Pratt of Riverside, Calif., and Paul (Karen) Pratt of Paynesville; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roderick; a great-grandson; sister, Jennie Pratt; and a sister-in-law.


Verrol Smith, 83, Grove City
Verrol E. Smith, 83, of Grove City died on Monday, Oct. 6, at the Meeker Memorial Hospital in Litchfield.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 11, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grove City. Burial was in the Burr Oak Cemetery in Union Grove Township, with military honors by the Litchfield Military Honor Guard.

Verrol Eugene Smith was born on Sept. 9, 1925, to Cecil H. and Myrtle G. (Flanders) Smith in Union Grove Township in Meeker County. He received his education at District #20.

He entered the United States Marine Corps in 1945.

Verrol married Joyce Johnson on March 16, 1947, at First Lutheran Church in Grove City.

He bought the family farm in Union Grove Township, where he farmed, drove trucks, and shelled corn with his sons. He also worked in New London at the grain elevator and later for the Meeker County Highway Department. Verrol also had a sharpening and small engine repair service.

Verrol is survived by his wife, Joyce; seven sons, Bruce (Beverly) Smith of Houston, Texas, Dale (Barbara) Smith of Sacramento, Calif., Wade Smith of Orlando, Fla., Kent (Diane) Smith of Atwater, Dean (Cheryl) Smith of Grove City, Todd (Goldie) Smith of Grove City, and Scott Smith of Chaska; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Myrtle, and sisters, Phyllis and Shirley.


Louis Stang, 79, Lake Henry
Louis S. Stang, 79, of Lake Henry died on Saturday, Oct. 4.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Oct. 10, at St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Lake Henry. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Louis Stang was born on Nov. 16, 1928, to Joseph and Ida (Dietman) Stang in Rockville.

He married Mary Glatzel on June 5, 1950, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in St. Joseph. They shared 58 years of marriage.

Prior to starting farming in the Rice area in 1955, he was employed by the Cold Spring Granite Company.

In 1962, he moved to the Lake Henry area, where he farmed the rest of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; children, Ruth (Charles) Schultz of Clearwater, Charles, Roger, and Paul, all of Lake Henry, Michelle (Roger) Watkins of Dunlap, Ill., Virginia (Vern) Scherping of Little Falls, Donna (Mike) Bradford of Zealand, Mich., Earl (Anne) of Paynesville, Evelyn (Ron) Nietfeld of St. Michael, and Sonia (Don) Dickerson of Roseville; 31 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and siblings, Viola (Carl) Odegard of St. Cloud, Iris Philippi of Cold Spring, Irvin (Luverne) of Cold Spring, Joseph of Cold Spring, Florence Weirens of Columbia Heights, and Ida Mae (Gene) Rossman of Cold Spring.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Marcia, and by his parents.


Ervin Gunderson, Eureka, Calif.
Ervin Gunderson of Eureka, Calif., and formerly of Willmar, died on Friday, Oct. 3.

A private family service was held.

He and his wife, Evangeline (Liestman), shared nearly 63 years of marriage. Ervin has a brother-in-law and sister-in-law in Paynesville. Evangeline was born and raised in Paynesville.

Ervin was a World War II veteran, serving as a surgical tech in France, Germany, central Europe, Tunisia, and Italy.

For 27 years, he owned and operated a Flying A service station in Eureka. He then worked for Tetrault for ten years during his retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Evangeline; children, David (Kim) of McKinleyville, Calif., Karen Mutz of Cottonwood, and Cindy Andrews of Eureka; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sister, June Jacobsen of Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Ben and Donald Gunderson of Minnesota.


Miriam Deadrick, 87, Paynesville
Miriam Deadrick, 87, of rural Paynesville died on Wednesday, Oct. 1, at the Koronis Manor in Paynesville.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 18, at Nordland Lutheran Church in rural Paynesville. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Miriam Janice Martinson was born on Sept. 16, 1921, to Linus and Anna (Anderson) Martinson on the family farm in Union Grove Township. She grew up on the family farm and attended District 19 Country School. Miriam worked as a hired girl in the community as a teenager.

She married Dale Deadrick on June 4, 1939. One son and two daughters were born to this union. The family lived south of Lake Koronis in rural Paynesville.

Miriam drove a livestock truck, hauling cattle to South St. Paul for 20 years. Afterwards, she began work at the Paynesville Area Hospital, where she obtained her GED and LPN license. She worked there for 20 years before retiring.

Miriam is survived by her children, Lynette (Jim) Schmit of Plymouth and Daniel (Marie) of Paynesville; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Louise Dodd and Sheila Bauer; two sisters-in-law; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale; infant daughter, Patricia Ann; parents; brothers, Robert and Lester; and sister, Norma.


Leo Spanier, 97, Cold Spring
Leo Spanier, 97, of Cold Spring and formerly of St. Martin, died on Sunday, Sept. 28, at the Assumption Home in Cold Spring.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 4, at St. Martin Catholic Church. Burial was in the St. Martin Parish Cemetery.

Leo Spanier was born on Sept. 4, 1911, to Christopher and Susan (Mehr) Spanier in St. Martin.

He married Marie Bauer on Oct. 6, 1937, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spring Hill. They farmed in Roscoe until 1960, when they moved to St. Martin, where they continued farming.

They moved to Assumption Court in 2000. Their union lasted until Marie's death in 2004.

Leo is survived by his children, Ruby (Andy) Anderson of Bemidji, Denis (Kathy) of Mesa, Ariz., Ann (Ralph) Schramel of Richmond, Linda Spanier of El Sobrante, Calif., Chris (Peggy) of Paynesville, and Leon (Julie) of Santa Rosa, Calif.; 19 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and brothers, Nic and Joseph.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marie; brothers, John, Math, Jacob, Mike, and Al; and sisters, Hilda Stang, Veronica Lenzmeier, and Marie Lauer.

In lieu of acknowledgements, Leo's family will make a donation to Fr. Thomas Kannenpalli's Parish in Kerala, India.
