Larry Schliinz, 63, Paynesville Larry James Schliinz, 63, of Paynesville died on Sunday, June 29, at his home in Paynesville. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 2, at the Christ Lutheran Church in Maple Plain. Larry Schliinz was born on Jan. 17, 1945, to Kenneth and Bernice (Peterson) Schliinz. He is survived by his children, Troy (Michelle) of Maple Plain, Paula (Brad) Grinnell of Shakopee, and Brandon of Minnetrista; eight grandchildren; mother, Bernice Schliinz of Maple Plain; siblings, Duane, Darrel, Joyce Allen, Judy Anderson, Lynda Lenzen, Nyla Rome, and Marsha Evans; and 31 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth and two nephews.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 3, at the Cremation Society of Minnesota in Edina. A private burial was in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
Her family had a home on Rice Lake for many years.
June is survived by her children, Thomas of St. Cloud and Dana of St. Paul and brothers, Jack Olson of Albuqerque, N.M., and Don Olson of Los Angeles, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald and sisters, Pat, Lee, and Vera.
Funeral services were held on Monday, July 7, at Miller Carlin Funeral Home in St. Cloud. Burial will take place at a later date at St. Agnes Cemetery in Kellogg, Minn.
Leonard Sholing was born on May 16, 1948, to Engnar and Loraine (Hougo) Sholing in Red Wing. He spent his childhood and graduated from high school in Cannon Falls.
Leonard was a member of the Army National Reserve after high school and during college. He attended college at Winona State College, where he received his bachelor of industrial arts.
In 1969, Leonard married Patricia Lair, and they had two sons before the marriage ended in divorce.
Leonard, a former Paynesville resident, ran his own commercial construction company, Sholing Construction Inc., for 30 years and was a member of the Minnesota Home Builders Association.
During that time, Leonard was married to Linda Sholing for a period of 16 years.
His love for the mountains brought him to Paonia, Colo. three years ago. He and his girlfriend, Jeanne Nash, were in the process of the residential development on his property in Crawford, Colo., at the time of his death.
Leonard is survived by his sons, Michael (Tracy) Sholing of Wabasha and Peter Sholing of St. Cloud; brothers, Donny Sholing of Cannon Falls and Bernie Sholing of Las Vegas, Nev.; sisters, Bonnie Jensen of Pine Island, Minn., and Mary Jo Weyand of Prescott, Wis.; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by both parents; sister, Doris Froyum-Sholing; and a grandson.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 3, at the Washburn-McReavy Chapel in Hopkins. Burial was in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
Larry was a retired industrial arts teacher and head hockey coach at St. Louis Park High School.
He had a home on Lake Koronis.
He is survived by his wife, Grace; children, Tom, Cindy (Bob) Patterson, Leslie (Lynn), Nancy Clark, and Bill (Kim); seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Monday, June 30, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
Lorraine Hartmann was born on Oct. 29, 1919, to Raymond and Matilda (Lenner) Hartmann in Paynesville. She graduated from Paynesville High School in 1937.
She worked as a waitress at Frank's Cafe in Paynesville, and in 1957 she graduated from the St. Cloud School of Cosmetology. As a beautician, she worked in St. Paul, Watkins, and Paynesville for over 30 years.
Lorraine is survived by her brothers, Alvin "Bub" and James, both of Paynesville; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Willard; sister, Bernadine Caron; and two nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 26, at 11 a.m., at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 25, from 5 to 8:30 p.m., with a prayer service at 8 p.m., at the church.
Mitchell Callenius Tokach was born on Oct. 23, 1986, in Burnsville. He had lived in the Paynesville area since 1993 and graduated from Paynesville Area High School in 2005.
He was an employee of Stone Holding Company in St. Cloud.
He is survived by his parents, Wayne and Marci Tokach and Connie and Anthony Karger; siblings, twin sister Valerie, Eric, Amie, Leah, Emma, Macave, Kora, Daysie, Dylan, and Kathryn; grandparents; aunts, uncles, and cousins; and a wealth of friends.
He was preceded in death by a grandparent, six great-grandparents, and an aunt.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 18, at 11 a.m., at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Richmond. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Benedict Schlangen was born on Jan. 29, 1924, to Jacob and Catherine (Braegelmann) Schlangen in Richmond.
He married Amanda Stang on Sept. 8, 1948, at the St. Martin Catholic Church. Benedict and Amanda farmed together northwest of Richmond.
He is survived by his wife, Amanda; children, Joey (Barney) Kiffmeyer of Luxemburg, Ron (Cindy) of Eden Prairie, Rich (Dorothy) of Marty, Roger (Nancy) of Richmond, Mary (Ron) Gillitzer of Stoutsville, Mo., Chickie (Maynard) Meyer of St. Joseph, Mel (Doris) of St. Martin, Alvin (Alice) of Freeport, Fred (Phyllis) of Albany, Steve (Cheryl) of Albany, Ruth (Carl) Lieser of St. Martin, and Ralph (Missy) of St. Cloud; 49 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and sisters, S. Wilma Schlangen, O.S.B., Cecelia (Ray) Silvers, and S. Lucille Schramel, O.S.B.
He was preceded in death by his son, Benedict; a granddaughter; a great-grandson; brothers Paul J. and Ray; and sisters, Ludwina Kemper, Theresa Theis, S. Cyrilla Schlangen, O.S.B., and S. Florentine Schlangen, O.S.B.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 26, at 11 a.m., at St. Martin Catholic Church. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 25, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the St. Martin Parish Hall and from 9-10:30 a.m. on Thursday.
Joey Lieser was born on March 10, 1943, in Paynesville to Berthold and Arcella (Lenz) Lieser.
He married Norine Imdieke on Sept. 4, 1965, at St. John's Catholic Church in Meire Grove. Joey and Norine farmed together on the family farm west of St. Martin.
He is survived by his wife, Norine; children, Cheryl (Steve) Schlangen, Karla Lauer, Tina (Joseph) Burbach, and Keith Lieser; eight grandchildren; siblings, Vicky Hartmann, Marion Olmscheid, Elvin "Smiley," Ann Patrick, Verna Kalthoff, Sister Jean, O.S.F., Dorothy Welle, Irene Bertram, Ralph, and Wilfred "Willie;" and brothers-and-sisters in-laws.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ronald; and a brother-in-law.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 19, at the Wenner Funeral Home in Cold Spring. Burial was in the St. James Parish Cemetery in Jacobs Prairie.
Alice was born on Feb. 18, 1920, to John and Helen Strodtman in Belgrade. She was a miracle baby; being born at two pounds in the 1920s was very uncommon. She was a survivor.
She married August Blum on Oct. 1, 1938, in Belgrade.
She is survived by her children, James (Barbara) of Houston, Texas, Myriah (Mike) Davis, and Katy (Nic) Hentges; a daughter-in-law; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, August; son, David; and her siblings.
Memorials preferred to Assumption Nursing Home in Cold Spring.
A private, family funeral service was held by the Cremation Society of Minnesota.
Ingeborg Schmidt was born on June 29, 1920, in Tallinn, Estonia. Her family immigrated from Germany to Paynesville in 1956 and moved to Richmond in 1959.
She is survived by her children, Beate (Douglas) Krinke, Andrea (Richard Rolling), Herbert J. Jr. (Debora Slee); five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Juergen.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 14, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spring Hill. Burial was in the parish cemetery with military honors provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.
Jay Ferguson was born on March 26, 1919, in Nevada, Iowa, to Alexander and Blanche (Bates) Ferguson. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1939.
He served in the U. S. Army during World War II from 1943 to 1946.
Jay retired as captain of the Ames Police Department in 1970.
He was united in marriage to Renate Mussmann on Nov. 25, 1970, in Houston, Texas. Jay was employed by Flemming Foods in Houston. After retiring from Flemming Foods in 1983, he and Renate moved to Belgrade.
Jay is survived by his wife, Renate Ferguson of Belgrade; children, Jayanne (Larry) Jones of Nevada, Iowa, Donna Bahr of Granite Falls, Marlene (Jack) Garrey of Ames, Iowa, John Ferguson of Danville, Ky., and Heidi (Dennis) Justison of Ortonville; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and sister, Darlene LeVan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; one sister; two granddaughters; and one great- grandson.
Funeral services were held on Monday, June 9, at Grace United Methodist Church in Paynesville. A private burial was in Zion Cemetery in Paynesville.
Arlyiss Rien was born on Dec. 30, 1924, to Frank and Orpha (Wood) Beier in Lake Henry Township. She grew up in Regal and attended School District #115.
Arlyiss married Urban W. Rien on Nov. 18, 1942, at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Paynesville. Four children were born to this union. Their union lasted until Urban's death on Feb. 14, 1999.
She is survived by her children, Linda (Alvin) Isdahl of Starbuck, Sandra Nehring of St. Cloud, Joan "Jo" Lorntson of Bloomington, Ill., and Larry (Denise) of Paynesville; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and brother, Robert of Ray City, Georgia.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Urban; brother, Frank Jr.; a sister-in-law; and a niece.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 10, at the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Watkins. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
Janell H. Winter was born on June 22, 1932, to Joseph and Sylvia (Ophoven) Hennen in Forest Prairie Township in Meeker County.
She married Alvin C. Winter on Sept. 15, 1956, at the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Watkins. They resided in Watkins until moving to Paynesville in 1964.
Janell was employed as a deputy registrar for the Department of Motor Vehicle in Paynesville for 22 years.
In 2005, the couple moved back to Watkins. Alvin died on Feb. 19, 2007, and Janell moved to Champlin in August 2007.
Janell enjoyed playing cards, ceramics, puzzles, and visiting the casino.
She is survived by her children, Jack (Margie) of Paynesville, Deb (Tim) Leithauser of Oakdale, Jody (Todd) Lagergren of Coon Rapids, and Gary of Stillwater; six grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Norbert "Sonny" Hennen of Watkins, Harry Hennen of Maple Lake, Joe "Butch" Hennen of Hanover, Ervin Hennen of Watkins, Steve Hennen of Hanover, Carol Nistler of Watkins, Betty Geislinger of Watkins, and Eileen Kern of Paynesville; and six in-laws.
Janell was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alvin; and brother, Eugene Hennen.
