Curtis Wegner, 78, Paynesville
Curtis Wegner, 78, of Paynesville died on Friday, Feb. 29, with his family by his side at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 4, at Grace United Methodist Church in Paynesville. Burial was in Salem Cemetery in rural Paynesville.

Curtis Herman Edward Wegner was born on Aug. 28, 1929, to Arnie and Esther (Goltz) Wegner on the family farm in Zion Township.

On Dec. 30, 1950, he was united in marriage to Carol Krause. They made their home on the family farm.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; children, Vicki (Vincent) Jenniges of Paynesville, Jean Liestman of Litchfield, Laurie (John) Magnan of Paynesville, Timothy (Sheri) Wegner of Paynesville, and Lance (Melanie) Wegner of Chanhassen; 14 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Curt was preceded in death by his parents and his step-mother, Josephine (Larsen) Wegner.


Alfred Melchert, 80, Paynesville
Alfred Melchert, 80, of Paynesville and formerly of Waconia, died on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at his home in Paynesville.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 1, at Johnson Funeral Home Chapel in Waconia. Burial was in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Waconia.

Alfred was born on Feb. 9, 1928, to Mr. and Mrs. August W. Melchert (nee Theresa Molnau) in Laketown Township in Carver County. He was baptized on March 11, 1928, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waconia and confirmed on March 29, 1942.

Alfred was a 1946 graduate of Waconia High School.

Alfred is survived by his long-time companion, Lil Jacobson of Paynesville; children, Pamela (David) Schrupp of Paynesville, Mary (Michael) Ditsch of Watertown, and Jonathon (Cheryl) Melchert of Cologne; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister, Alvina (Frank) Roberts of Hudson, Wis.; and Lil's children, Mark and Diane Jacobson and their children of Blaine, Brian and Pam Jacobson and their children of Paynesville, Russell Jacobson and his children of St. Cloud, and David and Young Hee Jacobson and their children of Germany.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; parents, August and Theresa Melchert; brothers, Rev. John Melchert and Gilbert Melchert; and sisters, Lillian Beiersdorf and Esther Pranschke.


Lenora Holper, 87, Paynesville
Lenora Holper, 87, of Paynesville died on Monday, Feb. 18, at Harmony House in Motley.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 23, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Lenora Haines was born on April 26, 1920, in Paynesville to Frank and Margaret (Berg) Haines.

She grew up in Paynesville and attended Paynesville Elementary School and later graduated from Paynesville High School in 1938. After high school, she attended a vocational school where she became a licensed practical nurse.

On April 23, 1945, Lenora married Arthur Martin. This union was blessed with one son and one daughter.

On June 19, 1950, Lenora was united in marriage to Mark Holper in Paynesville. This union was blessed with two sons and one daughter. The family made their home in Paynesville where Lenora practiced nursing in the area.

In 2006, Lenora moved to Staples.

Lenora is survived by her children, J.P. (Linda) Martin of Royalton, Mark (Jackie) of Hastings, Frank (Lois) Holper of Onalaska, Wis., and Margaret (Kevin) Grondahl of Staples; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchilren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter, and an infant great-grandson.


Carl Wagner, 79, Paynesville
Carl Wagner, 79, of Paynesville died on Saturday, Feb. 16, at his home.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Feb. 21, at Paynesville Lutheran Church. Burial was in the Ebenezer Cemetery with military honors.

Carl was born on March 30, 1928, in Paynesville to John and Mary (Abitz) Wagner. He graduated from Paynesville High School. Carl was a U.S Army veteran of the Korean War and served in the Army Reserve.

He married Bernice Becker.

He married Mildred (Olson) Simonson on Nov. 4, 1960, at the Paynesville Lutheran Church.

He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a clerk for over 24 years, retiring in 1984.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred; son, Gary (Charlotte Whitmore); stepchildren, Carole (Thomas) Schmidt and Steven (JoAnne) Simonson; two grandchilren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Lillian Clark, Hazel Ring, Arlene Stange, and Mildred Chapman; a sister-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters, Willard, John Jr., Maurice, and Harold, Freda Ortloff, Evelyn Lobitz, Gladys Wagner, and Minnie Sutherland, and first wife, Bernice Becker.

Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers


Vivian Bratsch, 80, Hawick
Vivian Bratsch, 80, of Hawick died on Sunday, Feb. 17, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 23, at Zion Irving Lutheran Church in rural Hawick.

Vivian Ione Klemz was born on Nov. 29, 1927, in Silver Creek to Charles and Ruth (Sheldon) Klemz. She grew up in rural Stillwater where she received her primary education from a district country school. Vivian was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran Church as a child.

On Nov. 29, 1946, Vivian was united in marriage to Merland Bratsch in Renville. Four sons and five daughters were born to this union.

The family moved to Hawick in 1985. Vivian was very proud of her home in Hawick. She and her family planted many trees representing great memories in their life.

Vivian is survived by her children, Dayle (Darlene) of Pennock, Carolyn and Ron of Susanville, Calif., Linda (Paul) Batsel of Stockton, Calif., Jody (Kimberly) Bratsch of Belgrade, Annette Bratsch of Hawick, Jami (Michael) Solum of Hawick, and Tonia (Mark) Danielson of Pennock; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and siblings, Iva, Neil, Lloyd, Gladys, Marvin, Jack, and Arlene.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Merland; sons, Elwood and Jason; brothers, Russell, Dayle, and Bud; and sisters, Lucille and Judy.


Irene Opitz, 83, Alexandria
Irene Opitz, 83, of Alexandria died on Sunday, Feb. 17.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Feb. 26, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alexandria. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Irene was born on Jan. 25, 1925, in Kenmare, N.D., to Alois and Magda (Bye) Frank, immigrants of Germany and Norway.

She attended grade school in Sauk Prairie Township near Kenmare and graduated from Tolley, N.D., high school in 1941. She furthered her education at Minot State Teachers College and taught rural schools in Ward and Renville counties in North Dakota from 1942 to 1944.

Irene married Clifford Opitz in 1944, at St. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church in Tolley. The couple farmed the first few years of their marriage. In 1949, they moved into Kenmare and were both employed at the Farmers Union Oil Co.

In 1951, the Opitz family left Kenmare. During the next 23 years, she made many moves with Cliff and family during his years of management of Farmers Union Oil Companies in Oberon, N.D., Paynesville, and Mankato. Irene was employed in bookkeeping at each of these locations.

They moved to West St. Paul in 1974, when Cliff was employed at the home office of Cenex in South St. Paul.

In 1977, the couple moved to Alexandria where Cliff became the state field representative in grain handling equipment for Cenex.

After retiring, they spent their winters in Arizona. Cliff died in May 2002 and Irene continued to live in Alexandria.

She is survived by her children, Devon (Mike) Zarling of Fairmont and Dana Opitz of Mankato; three grandsons; sister, Elaine (Earl) Hartman of Silverton, Ore.; cousins; and nieces and nephews.


Sara Vogelpohl, 67, Paynesville
Sara Vogelpohl, 67, of Paynesville died on Thursday, Feb. 14, at the Koronis Manor in Paynesville.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Feb. 18, at the Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville. Burial will be at a later date.

Sara Ada Clark was born on Feb. 7, 1941, in Paynesville to Justin and Lillian (Wagner) Clark. She attended Paynesville Elementary School and graduated from Paynesville High School.

On Oct. 26, 1964, Sara was united in marriage to Vernon Vogelpohl in Minneapolis. Two boys and two girls were born to this union. The couple shared in 34 years of marriage before Vernon's death on Aug. 15, 1998.

Their family made their home in Paynesville where she worked at Good Samaritan Nursing Home.

She is survived by her children, Scott of Sauk Rapids, Tracy (William) Hickman of Paynesville, Kelly (finance, Amanda Lewis) of Paynesville, and Mary Vogelpohl of Paynesville; three grandchildren; her mother, Lillian Clark of Paynesville; and brothers and sisters, Justin Jr. Clark of Southport, N.C., Dick Clark of Theodore, Ala., and Karleen Klein of Austin, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon, and father, Justin.
