Hildegard Niewind, 84, Roscoe Hildegard C. Niewind, 84, of Roscoe died on Tuesday, April 30, at her home. Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 3, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Roscoe. Burial was in St. Agnes Parish Cemetery. Hildegard was born on Oct. 19, 1923, in Richmond to Joseph and Catherine (Mandernach) Middendorf. She grew up in the Richmond area. She married Florenz Niewind on June 30, 1947, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Roscoe. They farmed on the family farm near Roscoe until retirement in 1987. Their union lasted until Florenz's death in 1993. Hildegard is survived by her children, Sharon (Richard) Bengtson of Paynesville, Art (Elaine) Niewind of Paynesville and Janice (Michael) Rothstein of Cold Spring; 12 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; sister, Magdalen Mehr of Sauk Rapids; and brothers, Ben Middendorf of St. Cloud and Ray Middendorf of St. Cloud. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Florenz; an infant grandson; brothers, Othmar, Richard, Alex, James, and Norbert Middendorf; and sisters, Mary Ann Mackedanz and Erma Willing.
Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, April 30, at Paynesville Lutheran Church. Burial was in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Grove City.
Margaret was born on July 5, 1916, in Union Grove Township to Stephen and Ellen (Robins) McCoy. She was baptized in the Church of Our Lady in Mannanah on July 16, 1916. She attended school in district 18 in Meeker County as well as Paynesville High School.
She married Arthur C. Johnson on Nov. 24, 1934. She lived and farmed with her husband in Union Grove Township all of her married life. Their union lasted until Arthur's death in 1988.
She moved to Grove City in 2000, Atwater in 2003, and to Paynesville in 2005.
She, along with several ladies, wrote the Union Grove News. She also co-authored the history of School District 27.
Margaret is survived by her children, JoAnn (Victor) Topp of Eden Valley, Jeffrey (Rebecca) of Grove City, and stepdaughter, Madonna (Harold) Miller of Liberty, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Art; daughter, Janice; a grandson; four brothers, John, Martin, Daniel, and Joseph McCoy; and three sisters, Mary Turck, Adeline Johnson, and Helen McCoy.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 1, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Burial will be held at a later date.
Jerry Sand was born on April 2, 1946, in New Munich to Paul and Dorine (Roering) Sand.
He married Diann Blasius on June 14, 1969, in Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Richmond.
Jerry was a well-known carpenter and woodworker in central Minnesota. His attention to detail and creativity with special and unique projects is what he will be remembered most for.
He is survived by his wife, Diann, children, Todd, Angie (Allen) Duus; parents, Paul and Dorine; brothers, Boniface of Richmond and Michael Sand of Hewitt; sisters, Betty Klaphake of Albany and Marion Nelson of Alexandria.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 24, at Paynesville Lutheran Church. Burial was in Pelican Lake Methodist Cemetery in Buffalo.
Howard Simpson was born on Nov. 25, 1924, in Cyrus to Theodore and Hazel (Alvester) Simpson. He grew up in Hudson, Wis., where he attended a small country school.
After his schooling, Howard worked for the railroad before he entered in the United States Army. He served his country during the Normandy Invasion in World War II. He was honorably discharged and returned home.
On July 2, 1947, Howard was united in marriage to June Link at Bethel Lutheran Church in Hudson. A son and daughter were born to this union. The family made their home in St. Paul, where Howard worked for the city. Howard retired in 1983, working for the city of St. Paul for 32 years.
He and June moved to Rice Lake near Paynesville where they had vacationed for many years. They were married 60 years.
Howard is survived by his wife, June; children, Bruce (Vicki) Simpson of Paynesville, Cheryl (Mike) Tobin of Chisago City; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchldren; and sisters, Shirley, Lucille, and Elaine.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Gordon and Donald; and sisters, Lois and Donna Mae.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 26, at Paynesville Lutheran Church. Burial was in the Paynesville Cemetery.
Donovan Ardmore Torbenson was born on Sept. 3, 1922, to Oscar and Marie (Syverson) Torbenson on the family farm near Enderlin, N.D. He was baptized and confirmed at Fillmore Lutheran Church. He grew up in Moore Township and attended country grade school and Enderlin High School, graduating in 1940.
After his schooling, he farmed with his father and brother, before enlisting in the Army Signal Corps in 1942. He served his country during WWII in the China, Burma, India, and Pacific Theater before his honorable discharge on March 3, 1946.
Donovan continued his education at UND in the fall of 1946 and completed a B.S. degree in 1950 and a master's degree in education Administration in 1953, while working as a radio engineer.
On July 25, 1947, Donovan was united in marriage to Gladys Lambert. Two sons and one daughter were born to this union.
They made their home in Drake, N.D., Ulen, Minn., Adrian, and Paynesville, where he was a teacher, high school principal, and superintendent of schools during his 31-year career in education. He retired in 1981, as superintendent of Paynesville Schools.
During retirement, he returned to his roots in agriculture and to farming the land he loved so much. He developed and operated an irrigated fruit and vegetable farm near Hawick for eight years and a larger farm near Belgrade.
He was instrumental in building the Paynesville Area Center and organized the Paynesville Area Charity Fund, also serving on both boards.
Don is survived by his wife, Gladys; children, Richard (Darlene) of East Amherst, N.Y., Renee (Pat) Waddick of Minneapolis, and Kevin (Lorrie) of Mankato; six grandsons; and a great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Osmond, Richard, Cora, and Mildred; and two nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 23, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Stewart. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Loretta Marie Klover was born on Nov. 4, 1915, in Lismore, Minn., to Henry and Marie (Recker) Kern. She was baptized on Nov. 6, 1915, at St. Anthonyıs Catholic Church in Lismore and later confirmed in the Catholic faith. She grew up on a farm near Lismore.
On Nov. 23, 1938, Loretta was united in marriage to Francis Klover. The couple resided in Trimont. In 1956, they moved to Stewart, where they owned and operated the Kern and Klover (Stewart Oil) Station.
Loretta is survived by her children, Raymond (Geneva) of Gibbon, Lois (John) Gag of North Mankato, Robert (Barbara) of Paynesville, Mary (Clifton) Kottke of Paynesville, Kenneth (Sandee) of Stewart, Monica (James) Scholla of St. Joseph, and Daniel of Stewart; 18 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchilren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis; six brothers; one sister; and a great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 26, at United Methodist Church of Peace in Richfield.
Herbert was born on May 1, 1914, in Minneapolis.
He married Gertrude Fritz on July 29, 1939, in Franklin Park, Ill. They were married 50 years and eight months and spent their 50th anniversary in Alaska.
Herbert worked for the Soo Line Railroad for 40 years, spending his last 29 years at the company working as an officer.
Herbert is survived by his son, Herbert (Joan); three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, June Simpson and Helen Schlogheck; brother, Lloyd; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude; son, Lloyd; parents; three brothers; one sister; and a granddaughter.
Memorials are preferred to the Shriner's Children's Hospital or to United Church of Peace in Richfield.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 22, at Grace United Methodist Church in Paynesville. Burial was in the Paynesville Cemetery.
Gloria Ruth Nelson was born on Oct. 6, 1944, in Paynesville to Willis and Rose (Brossard) Daniels. She attended Paynesville Elementary School and Paynesville High School, graduating in 1962.
On Aug. 25, 1962, Gloria was united in marriage to Elmer Nelson in Paynesville. A son and two daughters were born to this union.
They made their home in Swift Falls, Belgrade, and Paynesville, where she worked as a homemaker. Together, Gloria and Elmer were able to share in 45 years of marriage, before Elmer's death on April 7, 2008.
Gloria was a quiet and reserved person, who enjoyed spending time at home with family. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, and grandmother, who will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her children, Randy (Lauree) Nelson of Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, Canada, Pamela Tjaden of Willmar, and Holli (Brian) Kragenbring of Willmar; three grandchildren; father, Willis Daniels of Paynesville; sister, Joyce (Michael) Tougas of Paynesville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gloria was preceded in death by her mother Rose, and husband Elmer.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 12, at Grace Methodist Church in Paynesville. Burial was in the Paynesville Cemetery.
Elmer LeRoy Nelson was born on Sept. 1, 1938, in Sunburg to Charles and Katie (Gerdes) Nelson. He attended school in the New London and Paynesville area. As a young man, he worked for a mink farm in the area.
He married Gloria Daniels on Aug. 25, 1962. A son and two daughters were born to this union. They made their home in Swift Falls, Belgrade, and Paynesville. Together, Elmer and Gloria were able to share in 45 years of marriage.
Elmer worked and managed turkey farms for the last 46 years, most recently for Jennie-O.
Elmer is survived by his wife, Gloria; children, Randy (Lauree) Nelson of Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, Canada, Pamela Tjaden of Willmar, and Holli (Brian) Kragenbring of Willmar; three grandchildren; sisters, Violet (Melvin) Woltjer of Kandiyohi and Geraldine (Vernon) Soine of Paynesville; brother, Donald of Paynesville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 24, at 11 a.m., at Paynesville Lutheran Church. A visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Pelican Lake Methodist Cemetery in Buffalo at 2:30 p.m.
Funeral services were held at a later date.
Norbert Braun was born on June 9, 1912, to Christ and Susan Braun in New Munich.
He married Ruth Bagley on Oct. 19, 1937, in Lake Henry. They were married 70 years.
He farmed in the Regal area for many years and later moved to Florida, where he worked as a carpenter.
Norbert and Ruth spent many summers at their home on Green Lake.
Norbert is survived by his wife, Ruth; daughters, Phyllis (Bobby) Scarbourgh and Shirley Lacey, both of Florida; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Thecla Narcisse, Mildred Wazlawik, Hilda Fochs, Olivia Fawcett, and Wilfred Braun.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Henry, Gerald, and Leander and two sisters, Edith and Aurelia.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 12, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. Burial was in St. Margaret's Parish Cemetery in Lake Henry.
Liz Rothstein was born on Nov. 19, 1918, to Andrew and Christine (Olmscheid) Bertram in Spring Hill.
She married Alois Hemmesch on Sept. 12, 1938, in Spring Hill. Alois died on March 5, 1973.
She married Alfred Rothstein on April 26, 1974, in Lake Henry, and they moved to Paynesville.
Liz is survived by her husband, Alfred of Paynesville; children, Alice (Herman) Schaefer of St. Martin, Janet (Donald) Schaefer of Cold Spring, Richard (Mary Ann) Hemmesch of Lake Henry, and Donald Hemmesch of Albany; 24 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; brother and sisters, Helen Rose, Walter Bertram, Marcella Lieser, and Dorothy Braegelmann; and two sister-in-laws.
She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Alois; brothers, Norbert, Peter, and Elmer Bertram; and one infant brother.
Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 17, at 11 a.m., at First Lutheran Church in Litchfield. Burial will be at Ripley Cemetery.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 16, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Johnson-Hagglund Funeral Home in Litchfield.
Arvid Reinke was born on July 15, 1925, to Adolph and Elsie (Bach) Reinke in Hutchinson. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Cedar Mills, Minn., where he also attended parochial school. He graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1943, attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, and served in the United States Army.
He married Rosanna Miller on June 22, 1947, at Beckville Lutheran Church in rural Meeker County. The couple shared in 60 years of marriage.
Early in their married life, Arvid's career as a sheet metal tradesman took them to Grove City, Williston, N.D., and back to Litchfield.
In 1959, he started Reinke Sheet Metal & Mfg., which today operates as Custom Products of Litchfield, Inc., a nationwide manufacturer of cabs and roll bars for off-highway equipment. His other business ventures included: Litchfield Sheet Metal, Litchfield Thermoplastics, Mills Fur Farm Supply, Fabridyne, and Forest Time Products.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing at a cabin in Blackduck as well as spending summer weekends at their home on Lake Koronis.
Arvid is survived by his wife, Rosanna; son, Randy and friend Kevin Hanstad of Minnetonka; sister, Mildred Soder of Litchfield; two brothers-in-law; 11 nieces and nephews; and 15 grand nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Elsie (Bach) Reinke; son, Ricky; and daughter, Rhonda.
Memorials are preferred to be given to the Litchfield Area Community Foundation, where Arvid is recognized as a bronze level founding contributor.
Funeral services were held on Friday, April 11, at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar.
Joan Marie Palm was born on June 12, 1934, to Stuart and H. Blossom (Larson) Bergquist in Lafayette. She was raised in Minneapolis and later St. Cloud.
She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and graduated from St. Cloud Tech High School in 1952. She received her teachers' training at St. Cloud State College.
In the early 1950s, she married Eugene Westlund, and they later divorced.
In the early 1970s, she married Mertin Erickson, and they later divorced.
In 1975, she married Douglas Palm and lived on Lake Koronis. Their union lasted until his death in 1983.
She was employed as a homemaker and at Jennie-O Foods in Willmar for many years.
In December 2007, she moved to St. Cloud.
She is survived by her children, Robert Westlund of Superior, Wis., and Kathleen Westlund of St. Cloud; two stepchildren, Doug Palm, Jr. and Gloria Palm; one granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; sister, Camilla Bergquist of Willmar; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Douglas; and a great-grandson.
Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 10, at 2 p.m., at Paynesville Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Burbank Cemetery in rural New London.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Howard Luverne Quisberg was born on Oct. 11, 1928, to Adolph and Garnet (Metcalf) Quisberg in Belgrade. He was baptized on June 14, 1929, at Zion Lutheran Church in Belgrade and confirmed into the Christian faith on June 20, 1943, at Audubon Lutheran Church in Audubon, Minn.
Howard attended Concordia College in Moorhead for two years and then transferred to several other colleges, including the Minneapolis College of Music. He received his degree in education at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, S.D.
On April 9, 1951, Howard entered the United States Army, where he served as a clerk typist and assistant chaplain. He was stationed in Japan during the Korean War and was honorably discharged on March 19, 1953.
Howard taught school for 12 years in North Dakota and South Dakota and Los Angeles, Calif. He then went to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where he worked for two years.
Howard moved to Paynesville in 1967, where he worked at the Paynesville Community Hospital for 17-and-a-half years before his retirement on Sept. 6, 1984.
Howard is survived by his sister, Phyllis Overboe of St. Louis, Mo.; two nephews; four nieces; one great- niece; 11 great-nephews; one great- great nephew; and numerous cousins.
Memorials are suggested to Paynesville Lutheran Church or the Kidney Foundation.
Funeral services were held on Monday, April 7, at First Lutheran Church in Claire City. Burial was in the Sisseton Cemetery.
Phyllis Mae Raatz was born on Feb. 20, 1927, in St. Paul to William and Margaret Raatz. She grew up and attended school in St. Paul, graduating in 1944. She then worked for the American Red Cross.
On Oct. 26, 1946, she married Lyle Lipovsky in St. Paul. The couple made their home in Claire City, where she happily supported her husband in his family business.
Four children were born to their union. The couple was married for 46 years. Following Lyle's death in 1992, she moved to Sisseton and later to Watertown, S.D.
Phyllis is survived by her children, Cheryl (Terry) Nelson of Paynesville, Jerry (Linda) Lipovsky of Sioux Falls, S.D., Nancy (Don) Elstad of Jamestown, N.D., and Lori (Reed) Storley of Watertown, S.D.; five grandchildren; a great-grandson; brother, Robert Raatz of Tulsa, Okla.; sister, Shirley Dahm of St. Paul; and a sister-in-law.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and a brother-in-law.
